Fribourg 2018

Is the public health approach towards gamblingrelated problems reaching a certain maturity? Since the previous edition of this congress, four years ago, many advances give us hope. Research related to the field has increased and diversified. A constructive public debate clarifies the structural measures imposed on gambling operators on the one hand, and prevention measures expected of care providers, on the other hand. Better identified indicators give recognition - or not - to the committed resources. And as an outcome indicator, the essential measure of loss of quality of life for the players and those close to them, is about to become a reality.

But in terms of addictive drives, any appearance of progress should be viewed with caution. The concentration of economic interests on a small number of particularly vulnerable people has led to unexpected and

multiplicative effects. At the end of debates animated by multiple conflicts of interest in the face of incomplete or oriented knowledge, regulations for prevention remain weak, and only partially or entirely unevaluated. In response to this issue, the 4th edition of this interdisciplinary conference has set two central questions: how can we pass from diffuse and fragmented knowledge to building real systems of indicators? How do we move beyond the limits of research funded by mandates, and produce knowledge to the ordinary standards of independence and transparency?
